STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Students are responsible for ensuring that they are correctly enrolled in courses that contribute to the progression of their programs. The MyUNSW online enrolment system will allow you to enrol in any courses for which you have met the prerequisites or other.

Note: If you enrol in a course which has a pre-requisite, in advance of the results for that pre-requisite course being finalised, it is your responsibility to check your eligibility to proceed with the new course after receiving the revised result for the pre-requisite.

ONLINE ENROLMENT AND HOW TO SOLVE PROBLEMS

Sometimes you will experience minor problems that you cannot fix yourself while using the MyUNSW online enrolment system and you will therefore need to come to school office to solve the problem.

Problems the School Office will attempt to resolve for you:

Database problems e.g. when you try to enrol into a course that is open but it won't allow you.
If you are trying to enrol into a course and you are exempt or have advanced standing for the prerequisite and you are unable to enrol. If the exemption is not on your transcript then we will need a signed exemption form as proof before we can enrol you.
If you have a lab exemption and are unable to enrol because the database requires you to choose a related class. We would need a signed lab exemption form before we can enrol you into the course.

Please don't e-mail the office staff with any enrolment problems, as they may not be dealt with. It is better for you to come to the School Office and talk to our staff directly.

Problems the School Office CANNOT resolve for you

Clashes
Enrolling into full classes
Holds
Enrolments into courses that are outside your field of study e.g. Post Graduate courses, unless they are an approved substitution. If this is the case then you will need to come to the school office with your signed substitution form.
Enrolling into course that will put you above 24UOC limit.
Pre-requisites not meet if you haven't done the pre-requisites course.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBSTITUTION OF COURSES

To suit the special abilities or needs of individual students a limited number of course substitutions are permitted within each program. Any such substitution must have prior approval of the Head of School and be in accordance with the following guidelines:

The substituted course is of at least the same length and level as the prescribed course.
Core courses are normally substituted with courses covering similar material.
Students may substitute for two of the Professional Electives courses of suitable level and difficulty from areas relevant to the profession of Electrical Engineering. One of the substitutions may be a postgraduate course from within the School (see the postgraduate course list at the back), provided that the student has passed Year four Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications courses at an adequate level and a similar course is not offered at the undergraduate level. The other substitution may be a Year 3 elective from within the School.
Substitution is not permitted if it unduly restricts the range of courses studied to only one area of electrical engineering or computer systems.
Substitution is normally not permitted in Year 1 or Year 2.

COMBINED DEGREES

Arts, Science and Commerce

At any time after the end of Year 1 of an Engineering Program, students may apply to transfer to a combined degree program with Arts, Science or Commerce through Faculty of Engineering Office.

STUDY LOAD

A normal study load is 24 UOC per session. Less than 18UOC (3/4 load) is regarded as part-time. International students may not study part time as student visas do not permit this.

Local students may study part time, and may switch between full time and part time after Year 1. The School does not run a specific part time program and progress through your program may be affected if you take a very long time over the program. Part time study has important implications for Austudy and some scholarship recipients, who are expected to study full time.

Students with a record of failure may be required to reduce their study load. Some courses are offered in Summer Session and students have the option of enrolling in these to spread their study load or make up time.

The maximum number of UOC permitted per session is 24. Students may only be permitted to overload in exceptional circumstances, and only where their academic record indicates overloading is unlikely to result in failure. Permission must be sought from the course convener.

PROGRAM LEAVE

Students may take leave for up to 2 semesters. Please see Program Leave in the online A-Z Guide for full details.

WITHDRAWING FROM COURSES OR PROGRAM

There are deadlines for enrolling, varying enrolment and dropping courses without academic and/or financial penalties.
Local students may withdraw from courses, or their program, after enrolment and before the HECS census date (31 March, 31 August) without financial penalty. After the census date students are liable for the full fees for that session. For a complete explanation of matters relating to fees, please see the MyUNSW Fees site

International students who withdraw from their program, after enrolment and before the HECS census date (31 March, 31 August) will receive a refund of tuition fees less a $500 administrative fee. After the census date there will be no refund. For a complete explanation of refund conditions, please see the fees section of the International website

For both local and international students withdrawing from a course after the census date will lead to either NF Discontinued without Failure, or AF Absent Fail grades.

International students are reminded that they must study full time and that if they withdraw from their program they must transfer to another program, change their visa status or leave the country.
