Responsible use of Email and Online Forums

Unimail is the UNSW Central Electronic Mail System, provided by the UNSW Communications Unit and supported by Dis><Connect. Uni-wide related notices such as messages from the Chancellor, notices of student fees, end of session exam results are sent via this account. It is essential that you check your email regularly. School related notices such as timetable changes, submission deadlines and many other announcements are communicated via this account.

You can forward your UniMail to another account for convenience if you prefer. See Unimail for assistance.

There are some rules governing the use of your Unimail account:

Students should know that it is illegal to send offensive material.
UniMail accounts should not be used for commercial purposes.
The system should not be used for sending and receiving excessively large emails nor should it be used for spamming.
Before posting to email lists or online forums take the time to research the etiquette for the groups. Off-topic and offensive material will get you banned from posting.

Responsible use of Computer Resources

Computer resources are in constant high demand. Students are asked to show consideration of other users.

Do not eat or drink in computer laboratories
Do not use the equipment for personal browsing
Do not play sounds which may disturb other users
Promptly collect printing and dispose of unwanted paper in recycling bins
Do not tamper with other users' printing
Leave work stations clean and tidy
Return all furniture to its correct place
Keep conversation to a minimum

Students should know that it is illegal to:

give other users access to your account or make use of other users' accounts;
use the equipment to download, view or store any offensive or unauthorised material;
make or use illegal copies of software;
attempt to circumvent security and privacy features of the system;
attempt to crash the system.

Connection of private machines to School/University network

For preference, private machines used on an intermittent basis should use the University wireless network. Access rights may be obtained from the Help Desk.
We will maintain a list of MAC addresses which identify machines which have permission to connect to EET sub networks.
If you wish to get permission to connect a machine to one of the EET sub networks, then this must be granted by Jeff Lee or Ming Sheng, and may involve a check of the machine in question. This is to prevent the network being compromised too often, as is beginning to happen with the start of session.
We are trying to improve access for everyone - without such measures, we will all be shut out from time to time.
Machines with unrecognised MAC addresses will be blocked from our sub networks.

Copyright, P2P file sharing and the internet

Staff and students are reminded that the use of UNSW computer systems to download copyright-infringing material such as music, movie or video files is NOT PERMITTED.
The University provides students and staff with access to computer systems and facilities for academic and administrative purposes. Individuals who are found to be using the University's systems to engage in conduct which infringes copyright – including uploading and downloading copyrighted files without the permission of the owner of copyright - are exposing themselves and the University to legal action, and will be subject to disciplinary action.
Students are also reminded that under the University's Rules Relating to Student Use of Computing and Electronic Communications Facilities, copyright infringement by students will be treated as student misconduct.
The web is NOT a copyright-free zone. DO NOT assume that you are entitled to download everything you can access on the web. Some material may be on the web without the copyright owner's permission.
DO NOT assume that because you can locate a file through sites such as BitTorrent, Kazaa or eDonkey that you can then legitimately download, copy or transfer it, even for personal use.
DO NOT, without the permission of the copyright owner:
use University equipment or computer networks to download, redistribute or copy files;
post music or other files on University websites;
post links on University websites to websites which contain copyright infringing material;
transfer music or other files to friends and family via University email
DO NOT use University equipment to burn music or other files to any external source eg CD, DVD, memory stick. Although some websites offer – with the copyright owner's permission - mp3 or other files for free download or at a nominal charge, the University's computers and network should NOT be used for this purpose. If you want to download or transfer music or other files for any non-academic purpose, this should be done privately, and not on a University-owned computer or through the University's computer network.
